The KAIST In-Space Service & Manufacturing Workshop was successfully held on March 27, 2026, at KAIST, bringing together leading experts in space biology and in-orbit manufacturing.
Organized by the KAIST Space Institute and led by Prof. Hyun Jung Kim (STAR* Lab PI), the workshop focused on advancing microgravity-based biomedical research and experimental platforms.
The event featured distinguished speakers from academia, industry, and international space organizations, including BioServe (University of Colorado Boulder), the University of Tsukuba, and Axiom Space.
Keynote talks covered cell-based experimentation in microgravity, predictive models for life beyond Earth, in-space biomanufacturing, and human health in commercial spaceflight.
The program also included KAIST-led flash talks addressing fluid shift technologies, drug delivery, and physiological changes under microgravity conditions.
A major highlight was the signing of a KAIST–Axiom Space MOU, establishing a collaborative framework for future space biomedical and materials research.
This collaboration specifically includes space materials, sensor systems, and on-orbit verification platforms, aligned with NASA’s LEO microgravity strategy areas.
Notably, the technical Proof-of-Concept (POC) for space materials and sensor development will be led by Prof. Hyun Jung Kim, integrating her lab’s expertise in space environment sensing and advanced materials.
The workshop concluded with a panel discussion on defining requirements for autonomous space biology experimental platforms, emphasizing Korea’s strategic role in future space research ecosystems.
