Hyun Jung KimPrincipal Investigator
Hyun Jung the associate professor at KAIST in Department of Aerospace Engineering since September 2024.
Before joining the KAIST, she was research physicist at NASA Langley Research Center in Virginia for 16 years. At NASA. She worked in the Advanced Materials and Processing Branch (AMPB) and subsequently the Advanced Measurement and Data Systems Branch (AMDSB) starting in 2009.
She researches on passive and active sensor projects and was the PI for NASA ISO5 Optical Cleanroom. Over 9-years, she has been led PCM (Phase Change Material)-based metasurface optics and deployable space telescope projects for lidar and space communication applications. She is also the PI of the multiple success MISSE (Materials International Space Station Experiment missions, MISSE-9, 14, 21 (launch schedule on March, 2025).
Prof. Kim experiences in moving technology from the conceptual phase into fully functional, mature systems and add valuable insights on new applications. It includes the Scientifically Calibrated In-Flight imagery project to instrument development/deployment of remote thermal, visual, and spectral imaging capabilities as Space Launch System (SLS) health monitoring for Artemis missions. She mentored over 40 students (undergraduate and graduate) and served as advisor both graduate and postdoctoral researchers through NASA graduate program and NPP (NASA Postdoctoral Program).
